Abv. Exerc. Sports Physiol., Vol.9, No.1 pp.37-43, 2003. There have been few previous studies of cardiac outout for cardiovascular function at anaerobic threshold (AT) during walking exercise in healthy elderly subjects. The present study was performed to investigate the cardiac output and stroke volume at AT during walking exercise in healthy subjects of advanced age. All subjects were healthy and led independent lives. Sedentary elderly women (n=94) and men (n=56), aged 60-79 years, volunteered to participate in this study (mean age: women, 70 years; men, 72 years). Subjects were divided into the following four groups according to age: 60-64, 65-69, 70-74 and 75-79 years. Moreover, 30 subjects were also classified as a borderline hypertension group with a mean age of 70 years. The subjects preformed progressive incremental treadmill exercise. Oxygen uptale, cardiac output and stroke vulume were recorded continuously. Cardiac output was measured using the indirect Fick COs method. Stroke volume was calculated by dividing cardiac output by heart rate per minute. Blood pressure monitoring during exercise was performed by automatic blood pressure measurement. AT was determined by the ventilatory threshold (VT) method. Rating of perceived exertion (RPE) on the Borg Scale was monitored every I minute until the last stage of walking exercise. The mean RPE was II in all age groups and in the borderline hypertension gropu/ The oxygen uptale at VT was about 20ml・kg- min-1, corresponding to about 60% of the predicted maximal opxygen uptake for each age group. The systolic and diastolic blood pressures at VT during walking exercise were 190-200 mmHg and 95mmHg, respectively, whereas these values in the borderline hypertension group were 210 and 110 mmHg, respectively. The cardiac output at VT level increased from 51・min-1 at rest to 11 I・min-1 in all groups. Stroke volume increased from 70-75 ml・beat-1 at rest to 100-110 ml・beat-1 at VT level duiring walking exercise in all age groups and in the borderline hypertension group. The stroke colume at VT is sufficient as volume stress for improvement of the myocardial cintractility. Therefore, waiking exercise at AT in healthy subjects of advanced age was suggested to conform to the optimum exercise conditions from the viewpoint of stroke volume, heart rate, blood pressure and worl intensity.
