• The partial pressure of dissolved hydrogen was measured by a dissolved hydrogen sensor constructed by modifying a Clark-type dissolved oxygen probe. Using this sensor, the overall volumetric coefficient of hydrogen mass transfer, (K_La)_<H2>, was determined in the culture system and compared with that of oxygen, (K_La)_<O_2biol>.Good straight line relationships were demonstrated between (i) In(K_La)_<O_2biol>. and In(K_La)_<O_2sul>. (K_La for oxygen determined by sulphite oxidation) and (ii) In(K_La)_<O_2biol>. and In(K_La)_<H_2>.
