Binding affinity of streptomycin (SM) for the teichoic acid isolated from SM-producing Streptomyces griseus was measured. Approximately one μmole of dihydrostreptomycin (DSM) was bound to every two μmoles of phosphate groups in the teichoic acid.Magnesium ion interfered with the binding of DSM to the acid suppressed the conversion of extracelular SM to SM 6-phosphate by the intact mycelium. The latter suppression can be atributed to reduction of SM-uptake by the mycelium as a result of interference of SM-binding.
