The effect of amino acids and antibiotic inhibitors of cell wall synthesis on streptothricin production was investigated using Streptomyces sp. V-13-1 isolated from a soil sample in Thailand. Addition of glycine, serine, threonine or alanine to mycelium-suspended culture remarkably enhanced streptothricin production. When D-[1-^<14>]glucosamine, a common precursor of streptothricin and mucopeptide, was added to mycelium-suspended culture in the presence of vancomycin, an inhibitor of mucopeptide synthesis, a significant increase was observed in the incorporation of radioactivity into streptothricin. A regulatory mechanism is suggested to operate between streptothricin production and cell wall synthesis.
