Uptake of β-Xyloside by Streptomyces sp. during Induction of Xylanase : Studies on Xylanase Production (IV)

The uptake of β-methylxyloside by the mycelia of Streptomyces sp. No. 3137 was rapid and reached a plateau within 30 min in an inducing culture with β-methylxyloside. But the intracellular concentration of β-methylxyloside was always lower than that of extracellular β-methylxyloside. The level of intracellular β-methylxyloside was hardly affected by varying the culture conditions. The intracellular β-methylxyloside was easily excreted when the induced mycelia were put into β-methylxyloside-free medium. These results suggested that the entry of β-methylxyloside into the mycelia was accomplished by diffusion.
