Quadrupolar Response of Kondo Compound CePd_2Al_3

The elastic constants of Kondo compound CePdzAla with a hexagonal crystal structure havebeen investigated by the ultrasonic measurement. In the present single crystal we have observedabsence of long range order down to 0.5 K in applying field up to 120 k0e. The elastic softeningof the transverse C(5., mode is ascribed to the quadr'upolar response for the crystalline field stateof CePdzAla. The low ternr>erature softeninus of the lonuitudinal C33 and (lull modes below theKondo temperature V'K x 20 K are dominated by the Kondo singlet state.
