Effective Hamiltonian for CuO_2 Layer

The effective Hamiltonian for Cu0z layer is derived based on Cu:d.z ,2 and 0:p, or-bitals including the Coulomb interactions between Cu and 0 sites (]/) as well as theon-site Coulomb repulsion at Cu (&,) and 0 (&,) sites. It is assumed that Cu" isstable under doping. We found a region where parameters permit an attractive interac-tion between two holes located in the neighboring sites of the same Cu atom resultingin the simultaneous enhancement of the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between a Cu spin and a hole spin. The special case with vanishing Land U., which is ofinterest in the context of RVB, is discussed without recourse to the classification ofsymmetric and nonbonding orbitals.
