Spin-Peierls State vs Neel State I. Small Ising Anisotropy

The ground state of the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg-Isingmodel coupled with the lattice distortion is determined based on the phaseHami[tonian defined by the boson representation of the spinless fermions. Thisphase Hamiltonian can describe properly the possible feature of the resonatingvalence bond proposed by Anderson. All the possible states, including thespin-Peierls state, the N<Set state, and states with both lattice distortions andmagnetic orderings, are examined within the self-consistent harmonic approxima-lion by use of the treatment of Nakano and Fukuyama which extends the theoryof spin-Peierls state of Cross and Fisher. The phase boundary for small Isinganisotropy is determined which separates the spin-Peierls state and the N<Setstate, and it is found that the former state is stable in a wide region of parameters.
