Intersite Coulomb Interactions in Quasi-One-Dimensional Copper Oxides

Intersite Coulomb interaction between Cu 3d and O 2p holes (U..z) is shown to be important inanalyzing the optical conductivity and the Ctz 2p core- level X-ray photoemission spectrtrrn (XPS)of one-dimensional copper oxides strch as CazCuO3 and Sr3Ctr03 consistently. It is shown tFtatthe Cu 2p XPS is rather insensitive to U,j, while the optical gap is expanded by stronger U..j.With U..7 arotmnd 2 eV, the superexchange coupling constant of Ctt 3d spins is also reasonablyreproduced. The influence on the Cu 2p XPS of the intersite Coulomb potential of the Cu 2phole acting on the neighboring O 2p holes is also discussed.
