Continuity of Self-Cosistent Solutions between Commensurate and Incommensurate Phases of the Peierls Instability. : I. Analytic Investigations

Self-consistent treatments of the Peierls instability botl-m for a eomttmensurate (C)phase witlt Q=n/a arid an incommensurate (IC) phase are made with the mean-field approximation, Q and a being tlte wave rtumber of the lattice displa<xementand the lattice constarat, respectively. The behaviors of harmonics with wave num-bers nQ are studied in the IC-phase. When 0is well away from n/a, the amplitudesof harmonics are very 51112111, but as 0apprc>aches n/a, odd harmonics grow re-markably. The self-comtsistent solution of the IC-phase is shown to become equiva-lent, in the limit of Q-+x/a, to that of t[?e C-phase, only when all the odd harnaonicsare taken into account self'-consistently.
