Theory of X-Ray Emission and Photoemission Coincidence Spectroscopy

We present a theory of the coincidence spectroscopy (5p=3<7 XEPECS) betweenthe 5p=3d X-ray emission(57-+3d XES) arxd the 3d photoemission(3<7-XPS) spec-troscopies in rare earth compounds. In the formulation of the 5p=3d XEPECS, theX-ray emission process is treated as a coherent second order process and the elec-tronic system is described by the impurity Axaderson model. We calculate the 5p+3dXEPECS in LaF, CeF, and Ce0., and compare these results with our previousresults of the 5p-+3# XES. Although there are many transition paths in the X-rayemission process, it is found that, by use of the 5p=3d XEPECS, the radiative decayprocesses from each of different intermediate states can be well separated from eachother, when the photoelectron kinetic energy e, is fixed just at one of the peaks in the3(l/-XPS. Furthermore, we can suppress the interfernce effect in the 5p=3d XIS byuse of the Sj?=3d XEPECS with a fixed e,.
