Statistics of electron emission from a gold surface uuader impacts of slow (l-16keV)H" tons are investigated by usimag a Momate Carlo treatmem?t of ioxa transjcort and asemiempirical xmodel of kiutetic electron emission. By introduction ol' Poisson-distributed electron excitation auad transport, the Mouate Carlo calculation is in goodagreement witlt the electron emission statistics observed recently, which deviate fromPoisson distributions: tlae larger probabilities for no electron emission ancl for emis-sion of 3 or ntore electrons. Furtlaer calculatiouas of electron enaission sttntistics forbackscattered ions axad tra)cped iouas explain important effects of tlae back<scatteringand small-)aenetration of the ions due to their elastic collisiouas xvith gold atonas.
