Crystal Structure of Rb_2ZnCl_4 in the Modulated Phases

The modulated crystal structures of Rb.ZnCl. are determined by using X-ray retleclion data collected by an automatic four-circle di1Tractometer. In contrast to the dis-ordered structure in the normal phase, the commensurate structure at 146 K issuccessfully determined by a harmonic vibration model with normal values of thethermal displacement of atoms. The incommensurate structure projected onto thethree-dimensional section is determined at 233 K on the basis of the main reflections.The structure thus obtained has large mean-square displacements compared with thevalues in the other phases. This result is explained by the fact that the thermaldisplacement of the projection structure includes the contribution from the staticmodulated distortion of which amount can be evaluated from the temperature changeof the mean-square atomic displacement.[Rb.ZnC]., ferroelectrics, crystal structure analysis, X-rays, incommensurate ]l structure, commensurate structurel
