Strtrcttrral claarages acconaupanyirag ;x cubic-orthorl'roraubic trazusitiora in KzkIn3(SOj)3 NX ' ere iraves-tigated by higla-resoltrtioua netrtror? poxvder diffraction. Tlae strtrcttrre parauneters of' ctrbic (P2) 3)and orthorhornbic (P2) 21 21 ) plaases were precisely refined by the Rietveld metlaod xvitla itatetusitydata rneasttred at 300 K and 40 K, respectixzely. In tl'ne cubic phase, stmlfate ions exhibit dynaunicorieuutatior'ral disorderirag. Six oxygen atonas strrrotrrading eacl'u lNxIn" ion f'orun two lcirads of' luiglal3zdistorted octahedra, whose degrees of distortion are rerauarkably difFerer'nt f'rona eacla other. Onthe otlaer hand, strlfate ions are fully ordered in the ortlaorhou'rabic plaatse. XVe concltrde tlaatthe distortiora of the 1VIn0(5 octahedra atud slaort IN/In -O distataces ita tl'ne ctrbic phase are closel3zrelated to tlae raaecharaisrn of tl'xe phase transitiota. Results of netttrota difl'raction experiunents at31 differerat tezaaperattrres strpport the idea tluat tlae ortlaorl'tornbic -: ctrbic tranasitior'x proceeds'xzia the nttcleation and groxvtla of' tlae ctrbic phase xvitlain ata ortlaorl'xonabic raaatrix.
