Modulated Structure of the Composite Crystal Ca_<13.6>Sr_<0.4>Cu_<24+y>O_<41+z>

We determined the crystal strtrcttrre of' C013.6SI0.4CLl2.1;.0.111-, (y : -0.017 and z :: -0.035)by a technique of combined neutron and X-ray Rietveld refinement trsing a superspace groupapproach. This oxide is a lcind of a cozaaposite crystal consisting of two interpenetrating sttb-systeuns: (a) [(Ca,Sr)zCuxOa].. containing alk?rIine-e;rrth metals and sjcin-] Heisenberg two-legladders and (b) one-ditnensional [CuOz]x claains of' Ctr0,u squares sharing two opposite edges.The most retnarkable strtrctural feature is that parts of Cut atonas on tlae ladder are coordinatedto 03 atoms situated in the neighboring [CL1O2]X chains, forzauing Cubs tetragouaatl pyramids.Cut atoms in the CtrO5 pyramids have shorter eqtratorial Ctrl -O bonds th?rn those in Ctr0,jsquares, which evidences hole doping into the 5-coordinated Cut atotaas. Modulations are lessmarked in the [CLl2 03].. ladder than in the [Cu0z].. chain oxving to the presence of zigzag chainsof edge-sharing CLlO4 squares and corner sharing of' 02 tttorns in the ladder.
