Optical absorption due to the phonon forbidden indirect X.' X R,; exciton in TlBrhas been studied near the fundamental absorption edge by using an electric fieldmodulation method. The electroabsorption (EA) spectrum is analyzed under the ap-proximation of sufficiently weak electric fields. The experimental spectral band shapeof EA is explained by the quadratic Stark variation of exciton state for Is and 2s ex-citons. It is shown that for the case of Is exciton the onset of shoulder in the EA spec-trum corresponds to the threshold energy of the exciton whereas for 2s exciton thepeak of the spectrum corresponds to its threshold energy. Finally, a shift of the Is exciton state under the appliecl electric field is estimated to be about 2X 10 ' meV(cm/kV)' by the intensity ratio between the HA spectrum and the wavelength derivative ab-sorption one.
