Optical Absorption of TlBr-TII Mixed Crystals of CsCl Structure

The electronic states in T1Br-Tll mixed crystals of CsCl structure are investigatedby means of the optical absorption measurements in the mixed crystals with differentcompositions. The lowest direct exciton peak shifts continuccusly with the composilion; its energy in pure TRI of CsCl structure, which is unstable at room temperatureand below, is estimated to be 2.81 f0.02 eV at 13 K. The second and third absorptionpeaks of TlBr disappear by adding small amount of TIN, The fourth peak is found toshift continuously as the iodine concentration increases in the bromine-rich mixedcrystals but fades away in the iodine-rich one. These results are discussed in terms ofcalculated energy band structures of T1Br and Tll of CsC1 structures and a theory ofelectronic states in mixed crystals.
