By measurements of luminescence and the Urbach tail of indirect absorption, ex-citon states were investigated in mixed crystals of thallous halides for a wide range ofcompositions. From the estimation of the steepness coefficients of the Urbach tail inTlCl.Br. , mixed crystals, the relaxed exciton state was found to change from theself-trapped state to the free state at x=0.7 -0.6, consistent with the results of theemission studied before. On the other hand, the indirect excitons in TlBr.I. .(0.3<,XI'<1) were found, upon analysis of the emission band and the steepnesscoefficient of the Urbach tail, to relax always to tlte self-trapped states, which becomeshallow with increasing iodine concentration. Exciton states in mixed thallous halidesare discussed together with a theoretical study or. a binary mixed crystal and in rela-lion to percolation of minority-halogen ion clusters.
