Polarization Study of Tetragonal Cu^+ Aggregate Centers in CsBr Crystals

The absoption and emission spectra have been investigated in annealed CsBr: Cu crystals.Five absorption bands due to Cu^+ aggregate centers were observed at 3.75(A), 3.88(B), 4.25(C), 4.60(D) and 5.60(E) eV at 4.2 K. Excitations with the A- and B-band light induced an indentical emission at 2.60 eV, so that both bands were assigned to the same origin.For the C- and D-band light excitation complex emission were found at around 2.6 eV. From the polarization correlation of luminescence, these bands (A〜D) were attributed to tetragonal centers. The polarization correlations for the B-band light excitation could be explained reasonably by a mixed state model, in which a relaxed excited state has a mixed character of Σ and Π states. This model also agreed well with the polarization for the A-band light excitation.
