Relationship between 1 M KCl-Extractable Aluminum and Pyrophosphate-Extractable Aluminum in A Horizons of Non-Allophanic Andosols (Soil Chemistry and Mineralogy)

In the A horizons of non-allophanic Andosols, the concentrations of aluminum in the soil solution were considered to be largely controlled by Al-humus complexes (lakahashi et al. 1995: Soil Sci. Plant Nutr., 41, 119-131). Most of these soils displayed high concentrations of exchangeable Al which is toxic to plant roots due to its presumed rapid release kinetics to the soil solution. It is, therefore, likely that exchangeable Al is considerably influenced by Al-humus complexes. To confirm this assumption, we investigated the relationship between the amounts of 1 M KCl-extractable Al and pyrophosphate-extractable Al (Al_p) using 25 A horizon samples of non-allophanic Andosols from Noshiro City, Akita Prefecture. A significant positive correlation was observed between the Al saturation (KC1-Al/effective CEC) and Al_p concentration (r=0.714, p < 0.001).
