A Consideration on Oscillatory Combustion

This report presents some information on the mechanism of oscillatory combustion occurring in the combustor with variable cross sectional area. The analysis of the frequency and the amplifying variable cross sectional area condition suggests that the mechanism of oscillatory combustion in the combustor with variable cross sectional area is similar to that in a straight-tube combustor. Experimental results indicate that the dependence of frequency on the configuration of combustor can be estimated by examining that of acoustic frequency. The oscillatory combustions in a boiler and in a tunnel burner are examined analytically and it is pointed out that they are similar to the oscillatory combustion in a straight-tube combustor. Although the relation between the pressure amplitude and the combustor configuration is not discussed in this paper, the analysis given in this paper may be use for the synthetical understanding of the oscillatory combustions in the various types of combustors with differenct configurations.
