A Proposal of the Composite Collector Type Hybrid Mode Model of Thermionic Energy Converter and Production of the Functionally Graded Material Structured Collector

In this paper, a new hybrid mode model of the thermionic energy converter is proposed. Although number of papers dealing with the hybrid mode have been published, they mainly deal with the generating mechanism of the arc on the emitter. On the contrary, this paper shows that the ball of fire yielded on the collector is available for the hybrid mode. It is found that the functionally graded ratrial (FGM) structured collector is very effective on the new hybrid mode model. In this study, the FGM structured collector is produced by the ion beam sputtering (IBS) technique. Components and their densities of the films deposited on the samples by the IBM teachnique are judged by the energy spectrum of the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In our experiments, the samples are arranged at the several points along the substrate. From the XPS analysis, it is recognized that the samples have the form as graded components of the target material. Thus, we have obtained the FGM structured collector.
