Performance Characteristics of Ignited Mode Transitions in the Hybrid Mode Thermionic Energy Converters

Electrical output current-voltage (J-V) characteristics of the cesium vapor thermionic energy converter show two different modes of operation, i.e. an ignited and an unignited mode. The concept of functionally graded materials (FGMs) motivated us to propose an idea of a hybrid mode thermionic converter, in which these two modes can happen simultaneously by adopting a grooved emitter configuration. A hybrid mode thermionic energy converter was desinged and fabricated. In this paper, experimental results of J-V characteristics of the converter are reported, emphasizing the critical phenomena of the unignited to ignited mode transition.
