Magnetic Phase Diagram of Alternating Chain Compound Pb2V3O9

Pb2V3O9 is a quasi-one-dimensional compound with antiferromagnetic alternating chains. We measured the magnetization and the specific heat in a single crystal of Pb2V3O9 with applied magnetic fields up to 14 T and established a magnetic phase diagram. A phase boundary is explained by a mean field theory in a classical magnetic ordering of transverse magnetization, except for a power-law behavior in the vicinity of a critical field H_{\text{c1}}, which is expected in the viewpoint of a Bose--Einstein condensation of field-induced magnons. The field-induced magnetic phase has an asymmetric phase boundary, suggesting mixing contribution of excited magnons. The field dependence of the mixing contribution influences an effective mass of the excitation, resulting in different behaviors between the phase boundaries near H_{\text{c1}} and H_{\text{c2}}.
