Effect of Gastrointestinal Hormones (VIP, GIP, Substance P and Bombesin) infused intrapancreatically on Insulin and Glucagon Secretion in Dog

Synthetic gastrointestinal hormones (VIP, GIP, Substance P and Bombesin) were infused at a dose of 20 pmol/kg/min for 10 min respectively.<BR>Plasma IRI concentrations in the pancreatic vein and net release of insulin from the pancreas were significantly augmented during infusion of all of these peptides. The effect of substance P on IRI release was the most remarkable and its effect was transient compared with those of other peptides.<BR>Plasma IRG concentration and net release of glucagon from the pancreas were also stimulated by VIP, substance P and GIP. However, bombesin did not increased glucagon secretion from the pancreas, but stimulated gut glucagon-like immunoreactivity.<BR>These results indicate that many gastrointestinal hormones may play a role at the regulation of insulin and glucagon secretion through the specific action respectively.
