Syntheses and Properties of Metal Chelates of Ethanediylidenetetrathiotetraacetic Acid (ETTA) and Some Other Thioglycolic Acid Derivatives

Some new metal chelate compounds of ethanediylidenetetrathiotetraacetic acid (H<SUB>4</SUB>ETTA), Co<SUB>2</SUB>L·5H<SUB>2</SUB>O, Cu<SUB>2</SUB>L·4H<SUB>2</SUB>O, Zn<SUB>2</SUB>L·3H<SUB>2</SUB>O, Ni<SUB>2</SUB>L·6H<SUB>2</SUB>O, and FeHL·3.5H<SUB>2</SUB>O, where H<SUB>4</SUB>L is H<SUB>4</SUB>ETTA, were obtained. The infrared spectra and other properties of these compounds were compared with those of the metal complexes of other thioglycolic acid derivatives, some of which are also new compounds. Judging from the wave numbers of the stretching bands, the carboxyl group of these complexes can be said to be rather ionic. Though the bond is not very strong, thioglycolic acid derivatives seem to bond with the central metal ion with both the sulfur atom and the carboxyl group.
