ESR and electronic spectra of low-spin cobalt(II) complexes with some quadridentate Schiff bases of the N<SUB>2</SUB>S<SUB>2</SUB> type were measured. Analysis of ESR parameters led to the conclusion that an unpaired electron is in the d<SUB>yz</SUB> orbital of the cobalt atom. On this basis the absorption at 10×10<SUP>3</SUP> cm<SUP>−1</SUP> was attributed to the d<SUB>x<SUP>2</SUP>−y<SUP>2</SUP></SUB>→d<SUB>yz</SUB> transition.
