We studied the speech disorders resulting from the congenital muscular macroglossia and its healing process, especially with regard to the articulation disorders, through the investigation before and after operations that were held twice with the intention of reducing the tongue volume. The results were as follows:<BR>1. Dentals and alveolars showed the severe articulation disorders, as well as milder ones of velars, bilabials and vowel /o/.<BR>2. Though the lips were not used for the occasion of articulating bilabials because of the macroglossia, bilabials showed mild articulation disorders. The reason was considered that the dorsum of the tongue and the upper lip compensated the function of the lips. Soon after the first operation, contact between the upper and lower lips became possible, but the articulation disorders of bilabials increased, because of insufficient exercise of the lips for articulatin of bilabials.<BR>3. The last remained articulation disorders were perceived in alveolars /r, rj/. but these sounds were improved within six months after the second operation.
