The changes of covering and epithelial mucus at the different segments of stomach with the aspirin induced mucosal damage were studied by histochemical method.The oral administration of aspirin to rats decreased gastric covering and epithelial mucus and induced erosion with necrosis. On the contrast, in prostaglandin E2, pirenzepine, and cimetidine treated rats before the aspirin administration, the gastric mucosal damage and the decrease of mucus were suppressed. In addition, prostaglandin E2 and pirenzepine increased covering mucus comparing with the healthy control group.Gastric mucus, especially covering mucus, is very important as a defensive factor to the prevention of aspirin induced mucosal damage.
