Callus was induced from explants of the young flower bud, stem, leaf and rhizome tissue of Panax japonicus C. A. MEYER on Murashige and Skoog's (MS) medium supplemented with 2.4-D (1 ppm) or NAA (1 ppm). The callus initiated from flower bud in the medium containing 2,4-D produced many somatic embryoids during 15 weeks-culturing. The callus from rhizome in the medium with 2,4-D and kinetin also produced somatic embryoids in one year. These embryoids were multiplied and matured on the MS medium supplemented with various concentrations of NAA and BAP. When the matured embryoids were transferred to the 1/2 MS medium containing GA (1 ppm), or GA and BAP (1 ppm each), plantlet formation occurred within 6 weeks. When subcultured in the medium supplemented with NAA (1 ppm), these regenerated plantlets formed root and grew into intact seedlings.
