The measuring conditions for the evaluation of the qualities of powdered crude drugs by colorimetry were examined. In this work, the colors of crude drugs were specified by the CIE 1976 L^*a^*b^* color system which seemed to be more suitable than other color systems such as the Muncell color system and the CIE 1931 standard colorimetric system for the definition of the color differences. By this method, Ginseng powders of various grades prepared by different procedures were successfully distinguished from each other by their own specific colors. Powdered crude drugs are usually identified by histological examinations, which, however, do not tell much about the grades or qualities and the procedures for the preparation of the crude drugs. Now, by analyzing the colors of powdered drugs, it is possible to know such details of the qualities of crude drugs to some extent.
