^<13>C NMR signals of carboxylic carbons of the glucouronic acid moieties of glycyrrhizic acid (II) and of the carboxyl carbons attaching to the triterpene skeleton were found to shift from δ170 to δ172.7 and from δ177.5 to δ178.1, respectively, in DMSO-d_6 on forming carboxylate anions. Signals of other carbons of the glucouronic acid moieties of II, however, showed high field shift by about 1-2 ppm by ionization. In the precipitate formed at pH 3.0 and at 5.5 (VI, VIII), berberine (I) and II were in the mol ratios of 1:1 and 2:1, respectively. Comparison of the ^<13>C NMR data of precipitate VI and VIII with those of II showed that one or two mol of I linked to the glucouronic acid of II by ionic bond.
