Comparison of banded karyotypes between the Eurasian red squirrel Sciurus vulgaris and the Japanese squirrel Sciurus lis

The chromosome banding patterns of the Eurasian red squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris and the Japanese squirrel, S. lis were nearly identical except for minor differences in the Q- and C-banding patterns in no. 19 chromosomes and the number of NORs. No. 19 of S. vulgaris had two Q-positive bands in the long arm, while that of S. lis had no Q-positive band, resulting in their length difference. The long arm of vulgaris no. 19 was entirely heterochromatic, but that of lis had no heterochromatin. Ag-NORs appeared in four pairs in S. vulgaris and in three pairs in S. lis, and their sites corresponded to location of rRNA genes. Primarily, on the basis of overall banding homology, we regard the two taxa as closely related.
