Chromosome studies in peripheral blood lymphocytes infected with human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) in vitro were undertaken. High frequency of polyploid cells was observed in HIV-1-infected cultured lymphocytes (range 4.0-23.2%), while no polyploidy was found in uninfected cultures. Polyploid cells appeared at 6 hours after infection, and their frequency reached a maximum at 3 days and then decreased remarkably. Another noticeable was that infected cultures showed contracted chromosomes in their metaphases with a high frequency (up to 100%).
