Differential staining profiles of B-chromosomes in the East-Asiatic wood mouse Apodemus peninsulae

B-chromosomes (B's) in cultured fibroblasts of the East-Asiatic wood mouse (Apodemus peninsulae) from local populations of Korea and Hokkaido, Japan, were characterized with various chromosome staining techniques including G-, Q-, C-, replication R-, and restriction enzyme bandings. Besides the regular member of 48 acrocentrics, 4 morphological classes of B's were found, including medium- and small-sized meta- or submetacentrics, small-sized acrocentrics, and/or dot-like acrocentrics with indistinct centromeres. The differential staining patterns of these B's were rather heterogeneous, even in the same morphological class. The previous findings on the B's in this and other mammalian species were not necessarily compatible with the present observation, in that 1) B's are not always stained uniformly with G-banding, 2) B's are not always positively stained with C-banding, and 3) irrespective of the banding patterns, all classes of B's examined are late replicating. The present findings suggest that molecular composition and heterochromatinization may vary among the B's in A. peninsulae.
