Chromosomal localization of nucleolus organizer regions in eight Asian squirrel species

Nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) of three Asian flying squirrel species (Petaurista leucogenys, Pteromys momonga, and Pteromys volans) and five Asian non-flying squirrel species (Sciurus lis, Sciurus vulgaris, Tamias sibiricus, Callosciurus erythraeus, and Callosciurus prevostii) were examined by means of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with human ribosomal RNA genes as a probe. Three Asian flying squirrel species showed NORs in regions of the secondary constriction (SC) and/or the satellite regions, while NORs of Asian non-flying squirrels appeared in the telomeric regions in Sciurus and in the satellite regions in Callosciurus and Tamias. Although differences in the location of the NORs are hardly to explain the ancestral position of NORs, the location of NORs in satellite regions is commonly observed in both flying squirrel and non-flying squirrel groups.
