A clinical analysis was made retrospectively on the hospital records of 181 patients having inoperable advanced gastric cancer between 1972 and 1984 at Kitasato University Hospital to investigate the actual state of cancer over a 13-year period at this hospital. No let-up was seen in the number of cases of inoperable advanced gastric cancer during the 13-year period. The undifferentiated type of gastric cancer showed up predominantly, and the biological characteristics of the cancer were considered histologically, according to the differentiated or undifferentiated type. The most common complication was gross bleeding from the gastric lesion. Immunochemotherapy as a palliative treatment was considered effective in 13 percent of the case, and 50 percent survival time was 2 months.
