For the last several years the placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP) has been known as a clinically and immunohistochemically useful marker for germ-cell tumors, especially seminoma or dysgerminoma of testis and ovary. The authors investigated the presence of PLAP and other conventional markers ; human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and keratin in primary intracranial germinomas, using an immuno-histochemical method. Ten germinomas were examined. All germinomas were PLAP-positive, while none of the other tumor markers was detected. The positive reaction for PLAP was predominant on cell membranes but occasionally also found in cytoplasm. PLAP was found to be an useful marker for diagnosis in intracranial germinomas. Germinoma has an immunohistochemically property similar to seminoma in testis and dysgerminoma in ovary.
