At the lymphoma workshop in Chicago in 1973, Lukes reported a new entity of malignant lymphoma, which he called malignant lymphoma of convoluted lymphocytes. It was estimated by Lennert that this type of lymphoma made up about 2% of all malignant lymphomas and about 3-5% of the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. This disease is common at the age of puberty and a careful examination will disclose a mediastinal tumor in more than half of the patients at the onset of illness. The mediastinal tumor may appear primarily without a leukemic blood picture. The tumor sometimes leads to dyspnea and the infiltration of the pleura causes pleural effusion, in which tumor cells can be identified with immunocytological techniques and they are considered to be T-cells in origin. We describe here a 9 year old boy first presented superior vena cava syndrome due to anterior mediastinal tumor and the diagnosis of malignant lymphoma of convoluted lymphocytes was made by the thoracentesis and open biopsy.
