As indicated by remarkable changes in the susceptibility, ^<1)> lattice constants, ^<1)> electrical conductivity, ^<2)> and electronic absorption spectrum, ^<3)> TiCl_3 shows a phase transition at about 217 K. The observed susceptibility shows different temperature dependences above and below 217 K : in the high temperature range X increases linearly with decreasing temperature and shows around 260 K a broad maximum, whereas below 217 K it decreases steeply and then shows a weak temperature dependence. Furthermore the observed X is almost isotropic and no magnetic ordering was found by neutron diffraction.^<4)> However, a recent experiment of far-infrared transmission^<1)> at 80 K indicates a lowering of crystal symmetry. These experimental results indicate that the phase transition is related to lattice distortion but not to magnetic ordering.
