Theoretical Study of the Phase Transition in Layer Compound TiCl_3

The phase transition observ<:d in Till. is interpreted as being connected witha lattice distortion. Three types of distorted structures, which are called theantidimerization, dimerization and sheared structures, are cc>nsidered. For eachdistorted structure the energy bands for the 3da electrons of the Ti" ions arecalculated by the tight-binding approximation. From the minimum free energyvalues of the three distorted structures, we find that the antidirnerization structureis the most stable. The pararnagnetic susceptibility is calcutlated for both thedistorted antidimerization structuare and the undistorted structure, and the result isfound to be in qualitative agreement with the observation.
