Electronic,Structural and Magnetic Properties of Transition-Metal Mononitrides

The electronic, strttctural and magnetic properties of all transition-rnetal mononitrides areunvestigated by FLAPW band calculations. The equilibrium lattice constants estimated forNail-type ScN, TiN and VN and for ZnS-type FeN and CoN are in good agreement with theexperimental data. The bulk tnodultus of IVIN tends to be larger than that of' the single fcccrystal phase of the corresponding transitioua unetal. For all MXs the total energy of the Nail-type structure is lower tlaan that of the ZnS-type strtrctttre: for ScNxCrN the energy differenceis about 100 mRyd, and for IN/InN'?CtmN it is small (<30 naRyd). For MnN, FeN and CoN itis suggested that if their pttrely bulk samples of' Nail-type are synthesized, the ferromagneticstates may be realuzed.
