Lattice Dynamics of 1T-TiSe_2

Phonon dispersion curves for the high temperature j>hase of a layer compound17'-TiSe., which reveals a second order structural phase transition at 7'.=200 iK,are calculated using the rigid ion model and the shell model, The calculatedphonon dispersion curves, especially with the shell model, are in good agreementwith the observation with regard to their gross featur<cs. In particular, the calcu-lated dispersion curve for acoustic phonons propagating in the layer and polarizeedperpendicular to the layer shows an upward bend as this is observed. However,the obserx'ed dip at the L point cannot be reproduced. with our models in whichonly central two-body forces are assumed; the L poitat corresponds to the W2LVCvector of the observed lattice distortion. The results ztre discussed in connectionwith other possible effects.
