Theory of Temperature-Induced Helix-Antiferro Transition Based on the Self-Consistent-Harmonic Approximation-Application to NiBr_2

The temperature-induced helix-antiferro transition of NiBr. is studied on thebasis of the self-consistent harmonic approximation. The semi-polar representa-Lion is used to take into account the spin fluctuation effects quantum-mechani-cally. The calculated temperature deperidence of the pitch of the helical structurein NiBr. is in good agreement with the observation. The estimated transitiontemperature from the helix to the antiferro is 19.6 K which is compared with theobserved value of 22.8 K. The thermal average of a spin has been calculatedand compared with the observation. The spin contraction at I:0 K is obtainedto be 0.054.
