Relationship Between Upright Standing Balance and Walking Velocity in Elderly Subjects

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between upright standing balance and walking velocity in elderly subjects. Two hundred and seven ambulatory elderly subjects ( 69 males and 138 females, age range: from 61 to 95 years, mean age ± SD: 72.3 ± 6.64 years) participated in this study. In standing balance test, the subjects were instructed to hold the static standing at Romberg posture on a force platform. Anterior-posterior (AP) and lateral (L) sway distance and total distance of the center of pressure (CoP) on feet were measured with eyes open and eyes closed for 30-second. In walking velocity test, the subjects were asked to walk 10 meters at their ordinary speed. For statistical analysis, the Pearson's correlation coefficient test and paired t-test were used at the p<0.05 level of significance. Ten-meter-walking time was 8.17 seconds. Total and lateral sway distances with eyes open were significantly correlated only to walking velocity. The results indicate that measurement of the upright standing postural control with eyes open, especially lateral sway distance of CoP, may be a predictor of walking ability in elderly subjects.
