Physical fitness of 44 elderly women were examined by conventional testing tools such as grip force, pinch strength, spirometry (vital capacity and % vital capacity), range of motion test of the upper limb, standing balance tests and Barthel index scoring. Among the items of Barthel index, stairs score was very important as a screening check. It was indicated that four aspects of physical fitness (strength of upper limb, pulmonary function, range of upper limb motion and standing balance skill) should be evaluated using summarized scores by means of principal component analysis method.
