Elastic Softening at the Order-Disorder Phase Transition in a Plastic Crystal RbNO_2

All of the elastic constants of cubic RbN0^2 have been measured as functions of temperature. A marked softening of the angle shear stiffness c_<44> as the structural phase transition point is approached has been found. A symmetry consideration reveals that a bilinear coupling is allowed between the shear strain and the reorientational motion of nitrite ions. The transition can be regarded as an elastic phase transition in which the ordering of nitride ions induces elastic instability.
