Absorption spectra and their fourth derivatives of chloroplasts isolated from 16 different rice chlorina mutants were determined at liquid nitrogen temperature. The results suggest that Chl b is absent from 10 mutants labelled chlorina-1 to -10, while 6 mutants named chlorina-11 to -16 contain low levels of Chl b. Low temperature fluorescence emission spectra indicate that a light-harvesting Chl a/b protein of photo-system I is present in chlorina-1 1 to -16 but not in chlorina-1 to -10. Reinvestigation of Chl a/b ratios by a sensitive fluorescence method shows that the 16 mutants are divided into three groups different in the degree of Chl b-deficiency; chlorina-1 to -10 totally lack Chl b (Type I), chlorina-1 1 to -13 have Chl a/b ratio of about 10 (Type II-A) and chlorina-14 to -16 have the ratio of about 15 (Type II-B).
