Structural changes of oxazolam (IA), cloxazolam (IB) and haloxazolam (IC) in an acidic aqueous solution (0.5 N DCl) were investigated by means of ^1H- and ^<13>C-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In the acidic aqueous solution these compounds existed as iminium forms (III) after rapid oxazolidine ring opening reaction and then, hydrolyzed at an iminium bond of 1,4-benzodiazepine ring to benzophenone compounds (IV). But cloxazolam (IB) remained as an iminium form under these conditions. These hydrolyzed products of oxazolam (IA) and haloxazolam (IC) were isolated and their structures were determined.
