Concerning the metallurgical evaluation on the electron-beam welds of plain carbon and low alloy steels, stainless steel, aluminum and its alloys, titanium, zirconium and other nonferrous metals the following investigations were made: (1) comparison of the actual cooling rale of electron-beam weld metal with the value estimated from theoretical calculation, (2) accomplishment of the equation and the nomograph from which the cooling time from 800 to 500℃ that is closely related to the hardenability of the weld metal of plain carbon and low alloy steels can be estimated and establishment of the estimating process for the hardness of such weld metals before welding using the above equation and the corresponding CCT diagram, (3) measurement of the distributions of peak temperature rise in electron-beam welded joint and its comparison with that in TIG arc, (4) consideration about refining and loss of gases and alloying elements, (5) study of tensile, impact and fatigue properties of the welded joints of various metals, (6) discussion on defects occurring in electron-beam weld metal such as porosity, cracks, uneven penetration of bead and lack or excess of fusion in weld bead.
